Comparison of seedling growth among three co-occurring varieties of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze under greenhouse conditions Acta Botanica
Coutinho,André Luiz; Dillenburg,Lúcia Rebello.
Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze is a tall, long-lived tree species, which grows as an emergent tree in the araucaria forests of southern Brazil. Four varieties have been described for this species, and three of them were selected for this study: "angustifolia" (the type variety), "caiova" and "indehiscens". These are co-occurring varieties that differ in external seed color and timing of seed maturation. The purpose of this study was to compare the initial growth of plants originated from seeds of these three varieties, in order to test the hypothesis that these varieties also differ in the initial growth of their seedlings. Seeds were collected from a single forest location, and 60 plants per variety were grown in pots for a period of 244 days....

Phenotypic and antigenic variation of Mycoplasma Gallisepticum vaccine strains BJM
Ferraz,Priscila N.; Danelli,Maria das Graças M..
Phenotypic and antigenic variations among Mycoplasma gallisepticum vaccine F and Ts-11 strains were investigated by SDS-PAGE and serological methods (hemagglutination-inhibition and immunoblot assays). The SDS-PAGE system followed by densitometer analysis showed weak phenotypic variability between the strains, being the major difference close to the 75 kDa level where a prominent peptide band was detected only in the F vaccine strain. Polyclonal antibodies to the M. gallisepticum antigens produced in chickens were used in serological tests for this antigenic variability study. There were strong cross-reactions between the strains and homologous/ heterologous antibodies. The most evident characteristic was the specific response of the vaccine-type F...

Structure of the phenotypic variability of fruit and seeds of Dipteryx alata vogel (Fabaceae) Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Mota,Elias Emanuel Silva; Novaes,Carolina Ribeiro Diniz Boaventura; Silva,Luciana Borges e; Chaves,Lázaro José.
Abstract Dipteryx alata Vogel (“baru tree”) is a fruit species native to the Brazilian Cerrado and presents a multiplicity of uses, constituting a priority species for domestication and cultivation studies. The objective of the current study was to characterize fruit and seeds of D. alata from several regions of the Brazilian Cerrado biome to support strategies for ex situ conservation and utilization of the genetic variability of the species. Fruits were collected from 25 subpopulations, sampling six mother plants per subpopulation, with collection of at least 25 fruits per plant. The physical trait data of the fruits and seeds were submitted to descriptive analysis, analysis of variance and correlation among traits. There was significant variation for...

Variation in growth at different temperatures and production and size of conidia in hybrid strains of Verticillium lecanii (Lecanicillium spp.) (Deuteromycotina: Hyphomycetes) OAK
AIUCHI, Daigo; BABA, Yukiko; INAMI, Keigo; SHINYA, Ryoji; TANI, Masayuki; KOIKE, Masanori; 相内, 大吾; 谷, 昌幸; 小池, 正徳.
In a previous study, we confirmed alterations in several fungal traits in hybrid strains of Verticillium lecanii generated via protoplast fusion. In the present study, we surveyed radial colony growth in different temperature regimes as well as conidia productivity and conidia size of hybrid strains of V. lecanii to elucidate the various primary fungal properties of these strains and to determine the correlation between these properties and virulence to insect pests. Minimum temperature thresholds for all tested strains (except Vertalec®) were below 5°C. Optimal temperatures for colony growth were 20–25°C. Colony growth at high temperature was good or poor depending on the genotype. Temperature and strain significantly affected colony growth. Conidial...
